What is it working as a Bricklayer like in Australia?
Overall, I really enjoy working as a Bricklayer in Oz. I get to work on various projects including residential homes and commercial sites. There are always lots of work opportunities available and it is a reliable industry to be in. There are some differences to the trade in Oz vs. The UK, however, it is much the same and my skills were certainly transferrable. I was able to quickly learn the Australian ways of working and my employer was supportive in helping me to transition.
How has the Australian climate impacted your work as a bricklayer?
I am based in NSW and the winters are much milder compared to what I was used to in the UK. Back in the UK, I often faced downtime during the winter months due to constant rain or temperatures dropping below 5 degrees, meaning it was too cold to lay bricks. This directly impacted my income. However, the weather in Australia is far more reliable, allowing me to work consistently throughout the year. It can get scorching hot during peak summer, but I’ve adapted to the heat, it’s surprising how quickly you acclimatize. In the peak summer months, we start our work early and finish before the heat becomes unbearable. It’s all about being sensible and prepared.
What is the work-life balance like in Australia?
The work-life balance in Australia is a game-changer. I feel like I can spend more time with my family. Missing out on important family events, like school plays or parents’ meetings, is a thing of the past. My employer understands the importance of family time, and that flexibility means the world to me.
Have you found a sense of community among fellow bricklayers in Australia?
Absolutely. Everyone has been so welcoming, and I have built close friendships with several Brickies from work. We will often go for a few beers together after work on a Friday. There is also quite a big expat community here, and we all help each other out. I was a bit nervous moving over, worrying if I wouldn’t fit it, but I had nothing to worry about.
What do you appreciate most about the standard of living in Australia?
Due to the weather, we can spend much more time outside in our free time, which is great. We will spend our weekends at the beach, camping or BBQing with friends.
I feel I have much more disposable income in Australia vs. my life in the UK – I am paid more and because of the outdoor lifestyle it doesn’t cost a lot of money to go out and enjoy yourself, we often find free events, go to the beaches and national parks. Having more disposable income has also allowed us to buy a house we could only ever dream of having when living in the UK.
In summary, Australia has not only provided me with stable, enjoyable work but also a lifestyle that prioritizes family, outdoor living, and a high quality of life.
